The Columbus Academy wrestling team opened its season on Thursday, December 6, in a tri-match against Worthington Kilbourne and Madison Plains. In a rough start to the season, the Vikes lost both duels.

Gyvnn Mendenhall’22 was a bright spot for the Vikings, winning his lone match against Madison Plains. Also defeating his opponent was sophomore Chris Sugar, wrestling in the 145 weight class.

The Vikes ended up going 2-5 in their matches against Madison Plains, and senior Bobby Diller recorded the only victory against Worthington Kilbourne.

Despite a tough opener, Academy recovered well in the Logan Wrestling Invite, placing 6th out of 14 teams. Sugar came out on top in his weight class, going 5-0 over the course of the day to secure 1st place. Keir Gorospe’21 finished in second place in the 132 weight class after compiling a 3-1 record.

Mendenhall continued his strong start to his freshman season, taking second place in the 195 class. Rounding out the placers for the Vikes were senior Thomas Jones (4th at 182), sophomore Ethan Stahl (6th at 182) and freshman Zara Syed(6th at 120).

The Vikings face Logan at home on Thursday, December 12, along with Cristo Rey, DeSales and Big Walnut.
