In the 73 years since World War II, there have been countless movies about the espionage, violence and heroics that transpired from 1939 to 1945. Now, there’s a new movie, released August 29th, that deals with the international repercussions and effects of the war’s most terrible event: the Holocaust. Titled Operation Finale, it follows the agents of Israel’s national intelligence agency, Mossad, in their quest to track down Nazi officer Adolf Eichmann and to bring him to trial.

Big name actors Oscar Isaac and Ben Kingsley take the lead roles as Peter Malkin and Adolf Eichmann. Isaac’s character is part of the initial team of agents that Mossad assembles to extract Eichmann from his hiding place in Argentina. Kingsley plays Eichmann, an aging Nazi who is not willing to cooperate easily with his Israeli captors.

All of the Mossad agents, Malkin included, have their own distinct personalities and ways of approaching the task at hand. The depiction of their varying attitudes and interactions with each other as a central element of the movie helps bring the time back to life, since the nuance makes it feel more real.

Operation Finale  reveals the determination and resiliency of Israel and the larger Jewish community in dealing with the losses they experienced after the Nazis’ war crimes in the Holocaust. It captures the raw pain of Peter Malkin and his colleagues that influences their actions throughout the movie. While the movie is serious and deals with a horrifying historical event, it does so with few visually graphic scenes.
