10,000 Calories without the Beverage

A Half Mighty Macaroni Sandwich with kettle chips. (David Cooperman’20/Staff)

5 pounds of food. 3 slices of grilled bread. 13 cheeses. 4 pickle spears. Piles of fries and coleslaw. Upwards of 10,000 calories. Consuming this massive amount of food is what the bravest diners face when trying to complete the Legendary Melt Challenge.

Melt Bar & Grilled is a chain of 13 restaurants located throughout Ohio and known for the oversized sandwiches it offers. All of them branch off of the classic grilled cheese, known at Melt as the “Kindergarten.” From there, they design huge collections of food amassed between the two slices of bread.

Some of the many options include the Mighty Macaroni, which consists of fried mac and cheese smothered in cheese sauce. The Monte Cristo is a colossus of ham, turkey, Swiss, and American cheese on a sandwich which is deep-fried and covered in powdered sugar.

Even though a normal sandwich is almost impossible to finish by itself, the items developed by creator Matt Fish didn’t stop there. The Behemoth is a 5-pound challenge to put eaters’ stomachs to the test. Hopefuls travel to Ohio from all over the country to take on this sandwich challenege, and it was even featured on Man vs. Food in 2009, with professional eater Adam Richman barely finishing the mammoth feast.

If you truly want to test your limits, head to Melt Bar and Grilled and try your hand at the Melt Challenge. If not, their “smaller” sandwiches will leave you wanting to come back.
