Boys Tennis Falls in State Quarterfinals

Senior Harry Zaye will be sorely missed next season. (Sarah Neltner’20/Media staff)

After an intense district tournament eliminated the remainder of the Academy boys tennis squad, the doubles duo of senior Sam Vogel and junior Suriya Sundaram traveled to Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason for the state tournament on Friday, May 25, and Saturday, May 26.

In the first round, the Vikings battled Santiago Bustamante and Ilon Goldberg of Orange High School. Vogel and Sundaram breezed past the Lions, 6-1, 6-1, and rode a wave of momentum into the quarterfinals.

Awaiting the boys were Maanas Pisati and Mack Ellis from Indian Hill. Unfortunately, the Braves outlasted the Vikes in a grueling battle, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, knocking CA out of the postseason.

With a wealth of young talent, the Vikings seem prepared to reload after seniors Austin Abraham, Vogel, and Harry Zaye depart. Sundaram and fellow junior Drew Haffer will assume leadership roles, as sophomores Rhian Seneviratne and Ryan Wahl and freshmen Jack Madison and Arie Tuckerman also return with state title aspirations.
