Boys Lacrosse Splits Two Contests

The CA boys lacrosse team went 1-1 in a pair of wars, falling to Licking Valley before edging Hilliard Darby.

The Vikings traveled to Licking Valley on Tuesday, April 17, and suffered a heartbreaking 8-7 loss after an impressive upset bid. The squads went back-and-forth to begin the game, but the Panthers grabbed the upper hand late in the first quarter, taking a 4-2 lead. Academy refused to be left in the dust and swung back with two goals to knot the score at halftime.

Licking Valley took control in the third period and owned a 6-5 advantage heading into the final 12 minutes. Each team scored to begin the quarter, and the Panthers tried to drain the clock, clinging onto their narrow lead. Sophomore Charlie Yaw had other plans, firing a laser into the back of the net to tie the game. But Licking Valley remained calm, surging back in front with a goal its own. The Vikes frantically attempted to respond in the closing moments, but the Panthers’ defense stood tall, preserving the victory.

CA then hosted Hilliard Darby on Thursday, April 19, and pulled out a 9-8 win in overtime. Eager for redemption, the Vikings surprised the Panthers with their early energy. But Darby quickly regained its footing and took control with an offensive flurry.

The Panthers continued to score, but sophomore Andrew Swartz wouldn’t let Academy back down. He launched shot after shot past the goalkeeper, willing his team to force extra time.

With the game hanging in the balance, Swartz rose to the occasion, netting his fifth goal of the night to give the Vikes a much-needed win.

After prevailing in dramatic fashion, the boys look to build upon the momentum as they host St. Charles on Monday, April 23, and travel to Wellington on Saturday, April 28.
