2018 Mural for Earth Day

Digital design by Sasha Ahern’20

Earth Day has taken place annually on April 22 since 1970. From its humble beginnings, the occasion has since then, grown to a global scale as it continues to raise awareness of the increasing environmental problems on Earth due to air, water, and soil pollution. On this day of every year, approximately more than 1 billion people participate in a variety of green-friendly activities, such as planting trees and cleaning parks.

To celebrate Earth Day at Columbus Academy, senior Apsara Some and junior Caroline Mallory, Recycling Coordinators, organized a design contest for a second mural in the Barton Room Lobby to be flanked with the 2011 mural.

Scott Neal, our former Middle School Art teacher, generously offered to oversee this project along with several Upper School students, who volunteered to help out in their free time.

Sophomore Sasha Ahern, seeking to explore both of her interests in drawing and supporting the environment, submitted the winning design for the contest. In her design, she used creative symbolism in  a design that represented all humans working in unity to hold Earth together and keeping it healthy.

When asked about the message she hopes the new mural will send, Ahern said, “I want it to serve as a reminder to everyone in our school community to become more environmentally conscious and take care of our home for many years to come.”

Be sure to stop by and see the beautiful addition to the Barton Room Lobby.
