Winter Formal: An 11/10 Experience

Lights and dancing at Winter Formal. Julia Gurevtiz’19/Media

The Senior Dance Committee had an unprecedented assignment to fulfill after announcing its theme for this year’s Winter Formal theme as Netflix’s Stranger Things. Modeled after a recent top hit TV show, both nationwide and among Columbus Academy students, the already highly anticipated event was preceded by a Spirit Week that built up even more excitement for this annual event. In the Dining Hall this past Saturday, February 4, the dance finally became a reality, or rather, a fantasy.

Transported back into the 80’s, the time setting of the show, Upper School students walked through a mold-covered portal and into the chilling world of the Upside Down.

Stringed lights that were used to communicate with main character ,Will Byers, were strung above the dance floor and illuminated the iconic alphabet wall. Bright yellow caution tape lining the boundaries served as a warning of the deadly demogorgon monsters that could possibly be lurking nearby. The break room included a food station of Eggo Waffles (a favorite meal of other main character, Eleven) complete with toasters for heating and toppings.

With several key aspects of the show that were brilliantly executed throughout the venue and an excellent selection in music that kept students bopping, this year’s one-of-a-kind Winter Formal was a success.

Special thanks to DJ and Academy alumnus, Hamza Kashubeck, teacher advisors Mrs. Eden and Ms. Stout, and the Dance Committee for an 11/10 experience.
