Signs of Hope for Girls Basketball

A jam-packed opening week of games was followed up on Wednesday, December 6 and Friday, December 8, as the Vikings challenged Worthington Christian and Grandview Heights, both at the Mack.

Grandview Heights got out to a quick and damaging lead against CA. But Academy swung back in the following minutes. The Vikes were outscored just 6-10 in the second period, but their halftime deficit remained large.

The Bobcats opened up their lead in the third quarter, leaving a gap too large for the Vikings to close in the last eight minutes. Nevertheless, our girls closed out the game on a high note, winning the fourth quarter 11-8. Leading Academy in scoring was Skyla Johnson’18, who had 8 points. Jenny L’Hommedieu’19 and Christina L’Hommedieu’21 combined for 7 points, and Tori Abell’18, Kiersten Thomassey’20, Alex Phelps’20, and Charlotte Adams’21 also scored.

The second challenge of the week took place on Friday, December 8, as the girls took on the Warriors of Worthington Christian. Swarming presses and rapid transition play resulted in a hectic start, as neither team could gain an advantage. Similar to their game against Genoa Christian on Monday, November 27, Jenny L’Hommedieu got the Vikings on the scoreboard with an early three. A closely contested first-half showcased the Vikings’ ability to break the press and move the ball around on offense.

But the Warriors’ suffocating defense and strength in size proved to be crucial, as they rolled to a 44-20 win. Despite the loss, there were positive aspects to build on for Academy. This game marked the return of Emma Belford’20, who got late minutes in the second half and finished with four points. The offensive sets created open looks on offense, and the girls also showed their ability to beat WC’s defensive press. It is also worth noting that all 20 points scored by the Vikes came from underclassmen, showing that there is still plenty of room and time for development.

The home stand continues for the Vikings on Monday, December 11, as they take on Madison Christian at 7:00, and arch-rival Bexley on Saturday, December 16 at 2:30pm.
