The CA boys basketball team showed flashes of its enormous potential on Friday, December 1, kicking off its 2017 campaign with a 58-55 victory over University School.

Both teams came out of the gates swinging. Senior Addis Boyd ripped down rebounds and made several layups, but the Preppers quickly responded on the other end. Boyd led the Vikes with 13 points. The two squads continued to trade blows, and Academy held a 16-14 lead after the first quarter.

The second period featured more evenly-matched play. US guard Seven Richmond caught fire, and the Preppers surged in front as halftime approached. But the Vikings snatched the lead right back, as junior Dorrian Moultrie fed classmate Chris Boyle for a pair of buckets to give their team a 32-28 advantage at the break.

CA tried its best to pull away as the third quarter began. Boyle drilled a pair of threes and fellow junior, Hayden Compton, slashed to the basket for easy baskets to give the Vikes their biggest lead of the game. Boyle finished with 12 points, and Compton added 10. But the Preppers refused to go away. O’mahn Dobbins knocked down tough shots to keep his team close, and Academy had just a 49-47 advantage heading to the final 8 minutes.

After a high-scoring first 3 quarters, the Vikings and Preppers locked in defensively. The squads traded missed shots for much of the final quarter, and the score was tied at 55 with under a minute to play. Needing a spark, Academy turned to senior TJ Whitman. Though Whitman had yet to score, he rose to the occasion, burying a three with the clock winding down. US could not respond, and the Vikes escaped with a narrow victory.

Though CA did not play a perfect game, defeating a talented team on the road is an impressive way to begin its season. The Vikings will host West Jefferson in their home opener on Tuesday, December 5.
