After two rounds of battle with the other elite teams in Ohio, the Columbus Academy golf team won its first state title since 2012.

The Vikings traveled to NorthStar Golf Club on Friday, October 11, eager to begin play. By the end of the round, Chardon Notre Dame had taken the lead, thanks to its top golfer, Charlie Toman, shooting a state record 66. But Academy remained within striking distance, just 4 shots behind.

The second and final round was the next day, Saturday, October 12. With Academy in desperate need of a spark, sensational sophomore Ali Khan rose to the occasion and posted an incredible 67. Senior co-captain Cole Walter and sophomore Griffin Mitchell followed with a pair of 75’s, and other senior co-captain Sam Vogel notched a 79. On the other side, Chardon Notre Dame had a disappointing round, clearing the way for the Vikes to claim the title by 10 strokes.

It was an unforgettable season by the Vikings, and they are hoping to repeat as state champions again next year. Losing captains Walter and Vogel will be tough, but with four returning sophomore starters and a JV team that is packed with talent, it seems as though another successful campaign is on the horizon for the CA golf team.
