Academy’s field hockey team traveled to CSG on Monday, September 18, and visited Thomas Worthington on Tuesday, September 19. The Vikes beat the Unicorns 1-0, but the Cardinals squeaked out a victory and handed CA its second loss of the year, 2-1.
The Vikings played CSG in the midst of unseasonably hot temperatures. Despite the unusual conditions, Academy sustained its energy and its control of the ball for the majority of the game. This led to the Vikes’ lone goal, as freshman Regan Cornelius cashed in on an opportunity. The Unicorns tried their best to respond with a goal of their own, but CA’s tight defense denied every shot, posting a shutout and preserving the win.
Unfortunately, the Academy’s luck turned the next day. Thomas Worthington has been a rival of the Vikes, especially after the Cardinals knocked the girls out of the postseason last season. Looking for revenge, the Vikings came out pumped with adrenaline. A quick goal by Callista Popp’19 (assisted by Mercedes Crestanello’19) gave Academy an early lead. But a pair of minor errors on the Vikes’ part allowed the Cardinals to score twice, giving Thomas Worthington the 2-1 victory.
The Vikings return to their home turf next week, playing Bishop Watterson on Tuesday, September 26, Bexley on Thursday, September 28, and both Bishop Watterson and Hudson in a play day on Friday, September 29.
