The cast list for this year’s Upper School play was released Friday, and Academy audiences will be in for another great show. Since last autumn’s play was a comedy (The Odd Couple), director Scott Dillon has selected a drama for this time around. A Voice In the Dark centers upon the infamous Salem Witch Trials, told from the point of view of a teenager named Abigail Hobbs.

Hobbs will be played by Sidney Edson’19. Edson has returned to the theatre year after year. “It’s a lot of fun to just forget about what you do. It’s kind of like an escape. You get to be someone else,” says Edson. Being surrounded by those who are as passionate about acting as she is has also kept her coming back.

Students and teachers alike play an important role Academy’s theater program. The spring musical reading committee is the brainchild of director and English teacher Stefan Farrenkopf. Interested students can attend a series of meetings to read and discuss scripts, eventually offering input regarding what the spring show might be, although the final decision is still that of the director. Mr. Farrenkopf said, “It is important for students to take ownership of the arts program and have a voice in helping to select the show.”

When the weekend of October 27th rolls around and A Voice In the Dark opens, show some support for both the student actors and faculty members who dedicate so much of their time to produce a show that transports its audience to another world.
