Overflowing with phenomenal performances, the Vikes embarked on the postseason with flying colors. The Mid-State League meet–held at Whitehall on Tuesday, May 9, and Friday, May 12–boasted remarkable talent, as out boys responded to the challenges.
Although just a first-year team member, Junior Karibi Hart kicked off the team’s momentum when he placed third in the 100 finals with a time of 11.40. Senior Michael Kusi also earned points coming in behind Hart in seventh with an 11.86.
KJ Boyce’17 kept his streak of placing at the top in the 400 and earned second with a 51.65. Fellow senior Hunter Moffett caught Boyce’s energy and sped to fourth place with a personal record of 52.94.
Junior Nick Watson also ran a personal best in the 800–a fast race where almost every contestant set a personal or season record–with a time of 2:03.11, earning himself third place.
Shattering their PRs in the 1600, senior Grayson Mick and junior Nick Robie flew in with times of 4:30.27 and 4:33.57 to place third and fourth, respectively.
As if the PRs in the previous events were not enough, sophomore Liam McCann and freshman Charlie Sabgir broke their previous bests in the 3200. In 10:07.90 for McCann and 10.20.74 for Sabgir, the boys took third and eighth place, respectively.
Matching the high standard set by the rest of the team, Tommy Mampieri ran to fourth place in the 300 hurdles and earned a personal record of 42.42.
The boys controlled individual events, but their true prowess came in relays. In the 4×100, Nathan Sardo’17, Harry Mills’19, Hart, and Kusi earned fourth by running 44.96.
Sardo, Hart, and Mills carried that strength to the 4×200 along with Boyce to run a swift 1:32.08. Although this time earned second place, the boys finished a mere .57 seconds behind the winner.
In the 4×400, Hart and Moffett showed off their skills once again with Dylan Warren’17 and Mampieri, snatching second place with a time of 3:29.29.
The 4×800 with Mick, Watson, Robie, and McCann dominated the track in 8:07.38 and took second place. Their time is the second fastest 4×800 in the state and shows immense promise for a bright postseason.
The boys finished in fifth overall and look to carry that strength to to districts held at Watkins on Tuesday, May 16, Thursday, May 18, and Saturday, May 20.
