After a productive Thanksgiving with many practices, both girls’ basketball teams started their regular seasons by playing three games each, one against Groveport Madison, Whitehall, and Bloom Carroll. Although varsity lost all three, the JV team won two of their games.
Both teams faced Groveport Madison last Tuesday, November 29. The JV team won 30-17, but varsity needed with 43-58, with a notable Morgan Hamilton’17 standing down a difficult charge and protecting the paint.
On Thursday, December 1, both squads had close games against Whitehall. Varsity decreased the point gap from their game against Groveport, but unfortunately still lost 40-48. The JV squad secured its lead at 4 minutes into the 4th quarter. With this momentum the JV team won 28-18.
In the games against Bloom Carroll on Saturday, November 3, Tani Obikunle’19 won the opening jump ball against a girl 4 inches taller. Despite this, Academy lost at 43-73. The JV’s Kiersten Thomassey’20 held up against two charges but it couldn’t withstand their competitors strong offense, losing 27-44.
This week, both teams go to West Jefferson on Tuesday, December 6, before facing Berne Union (JV) and Millersport (varsity) on Thursday, December 8. They round out their week by playing Worthington Christian on Saturday, December 10, at home.
