Academy’s “Kids-4-Kids,” a school-wide event that supports 31 local families and the Brookwood Food Pantry collected more than 5,300 donated items.
Many of the families that Kids 4 Kids sponsors are in deep need. Service Board Director, Mrs. Bening says, “86% of families at the Childhood League are impoverished and have at least one child who has special needs.”
While bringing in used clothing and canned goods doesn’t seem to be a daunting task for many of our students, in more ways than one these contributions go a long way to help a multitude of people.
Our 6th grade students sort and shop through all of the canned goods, selecting items for each sponsored family. The additional food not used for sponsored families will be dispatched to Brookwood Food Pantry. Bening says, “We are one of their major sources of support. Academy and and one other school support their food pantry, which serves a low-income elderly population. The pantry also houses a school that serves special-needs high school students. That is where the rest of the food goes.”
The sponsored families will collect their clothes either by collecting their items at the Childhood League or by strolling through a store set up by the 8th grade. After the sponsored families have selected their items, non-sponsored league families are invited to come browse through the store.
