Girls soccer has never won a regional semifinal game, and after a thrilling overtime victory in the district championship, the 2016 squad beamed with confidence going into its matchup against Bishop Rosecrans on Tuesday, November 1.
The Vikings got off the mark first when Sophie Krings’17 served the ball across the box to Apsara Som’18, who placed it in the left corner, putting the girls up 1-0.
Their opponent’s quickness and physicality, however, persisted into the second half and scored off a breakaway, tying the showdown at 1-1.
The Vikes battled but let in a final goal with 20 minutes remaining. The girls desperately tried to regain momentum but failed to capitalize on free kicks, corner, and breakaways.
The clock winded down, and the game ended in a 1-2 loss.
Defeat hurts, but these Vikings knew the importance of winning and losing with grace.
With one last cheer, the historic season ended, but despite adversity, this team emerged as one of the top in the region.
