Girls are Delighted after October 29th Win. Photo by Mrs. Som
On Saturday, October 29, girls soccer faced rival Worthington Christian in the district championship. After a 3-0 loss during the regular season, the Vikes knew the odds were against them.
The game began with a shaky start. The Warriors had a corner, and Kyra Zoog’18 saved two shots before the last one flew over the defenders and into net, putting CA down 0-1.
Apsara Som’17 saw an opening, and in a blur, the ball soared over the keeper’s head, putting the Vikes on the board going into the half.
Early in the second half, the referee called a penalty kick in favor of Worthington Christian, ultimately putting our girls down 2-1.
The squad was not going to let a foolish call cost it the game. Muriel Goldfarb charged down the sideline, cut back, and found senior star Sophie Krings, who netted the ball into the corner off the first touch and tied the game.
The girls stretched, hydrated, and revved for the ensuing overtime.
After losing the ball on their half of the field, the Vikings battled for it back.
Som took the ball down the field and eyed a ready Krings in front of the goal. Som prepared to kick the ball off the defender for a corner, but it went through her feet over to Kring, who with a soft strike, slipped the ball under the goalie just 42 seconds into overtime.
The girls piled high in a jubilant embrace. Som said, “I put my head into my hands and just cried . . . After I lifted my hands out of my face, I saw the student section around us. We were hugging and screaming!”
The girls came hungry, ready to avenge last season’s devastating district final loss, and they did so in memorable fashion.
The team, including many proud seniors, has another battle to look forward to.
