The field hockey team rounded out its regular season this week with two solid games against Upper Arlington and New Albany. Because of the two 2-0 victories that Academy cinched, the Vikings will enter the postseason undefeated and ranked first in the district.
The game against Upper Arlington on Monday, October 10th had a special meaning to both teams, who wore pink clothes in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. After the game—with Carolyn Bowman’19 and Alaina Gwin’17 scoring—UA and Academy had a ceremony to honor breast cancer victims and survivors in spite of their rivalries.
Callista Popp’19 said her mother and she “both shed some tears. It was a beautiful moment for everyone in the stadium.” The players handed pink carnations to survivors in attendance.
A second ceremony last week honored Coach Anne Horton, who has worked with Academy girls for 25 years. This season is her fourth undefeated season in a decade.
On Thursday, October 13, The Vikings dressed up in “throwback skirts” to honor Coach Horton’s original team as the girls face off against New Albany. The Vikes beat the Eagles 2-0 with goals by Baylee Mueller’17 and Bowman’19. Goalie Tia Proicou’17 had one save as Academy regained control and kept the ball away from its defensive end.
The Vikings enter the post-season with a home game against Lancaster on Wednesday, October 19.
