Football Stays Hot With Another Win

Facing a relatively unchallenging opponent in the midst of an otherwise difficult schedule, it would’ve been easy for the Academy football team to look past Madison Plains. But the Vikings remained laser-focused and took care of business against the Golden Eagles, winning 45-20.

Despite playing their first road game in 3 weeks, the Vikes looked right at home on Madison Plains’ turf. On the first play of the game, the Golden Eagles fumbled, and junior Matt Schiano recovered for Academy. A few plays later, junior Herman Moultrie strolled into the end zone, giving the Vikes a 7-0 lead less than a minute into the game.

After the defense forced a turnover on downs, the Vikings’ offense took over with great field position. There was no need for the Vikes to move any closer, as Moultrie knifed through the defense and ran 24 yards for his second touchdown of the night.

Academy carried its 14-0 lead into the second quarter, but the Golden Eagles soon cut the Vikings’ lead in half with a rushing touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt was denied, and the Vikes got the ball back with an 8-point lead.

But Academy’s star running back Moultrie made sure that there would be no upset. On the first play of the ensuing drive, Moultrie burst through a hole and used his elite speed to bolt past every defender for an 82-yard touchdown, his eleventh in just seven games. The Golden Eagles attempted to respond, but that only led to more points for Academy.

The Vikes ferocious defense scored its third touchdown of the season, as senior Roman Bellisari picked off a pass and took it 50 yards to the house. It was Bellisari’s second straight game with an interception.

Madison Plains had a response, however, as they put together a long scoring drive to make the score 28-14. The Vikes tacked on a field goal before the half and headed to the locker room with a comfortable 17-point lead.

Despite the big advantage, the Vikings refused to take their foot off the gas in the third quarter. Senior quarterback Nick Stringer engineered a long touchdown drive to start the second half, capping it off with a 1-yard touchdown pass to one of Academy’s most impressive sophomores: receiver Chris Boyle. Just minutes later, the Vikes’ offense put the finishing touches on another masterful performance, as junior Josh Pearson broke away for a 40-yard rushing touchdown.

Sitting on a 31-point lead, the Vikings began substituting their backups, giving them valuable playing time and allowing them to complete the victory.

It was an impressive all-around performance for the Vikes, as their record improved to 6-1 for the season. They will be on enemy ground again next week as they go to Berne Union to play the Rockets on Friday, October 14.
