On Friday, September 2, Academy’s football team had its home opener, facing off against Linden-McKinley. Like their last game, the Vikes struck on their opening possession, with senior quarterback Nick Stringer hooking up with junior Jerome Buckner for a 35 yard touchdown. Buckner caught the ball on the sideline, burst upfield, and then juked a Panthers defender, sending the electric Academy student section into a frenzy.
After junior Josh Pearson plowed his way into the end zone from a yard out to extend the Vikes’ lead, the Panthers scored their lone touchdown, running it in from 61 yards out and temporarily grabbing the momentum.
But the Vikings immediately took it back, as Stringer connected with the dazzling sophomore receiver Dorrian Moultrie for a 22 yard touchdown. On the Vikes’ ensuing possession, junior Herman Moultrie barreled his way to pay dirt, giving Academy a comfortable 31-7 lead. From there, the Vikings just piled it on for good measure. Herman dashed into the end zone again to begin the third quarter, giving him five touchdowns in his first two games alone. Then, senior Anthony Sugar took a handoff and trucked seemingly every Panther defender to cap off another impressive offensive performance from the Vikes with a touchdown.
When it was all said and done, Academy had finished off a second consecutive blowout to start the season with a 44 -7 victory.
The Vikings continue to dominate, as they have now outscored their opponents by a total of 106-7 in their first two games. But with perhaps the toughest game of the season at Newark Catholic on Saturday, September 10, they must bring their A game again to come out with a win.
