In the Block Studio, the masterpieces of former and present students speak for themselves. Block’s move to the new, modern building will leave behind much more than the paint splattered walls. “Bittersweet is a word that does not do it justice,” says Block.
The task of sorting out what is worth keeping and what is not is extremely difficult, according to Block. His aim is to keep thirty pieces that he cannot live without, while acknowledging that it may be time to go for other pieces.
In Academy’s new art wing, Block vows to make his room feel familiar to his current students.
“Personality” distinguishes Block’s room. Each cabinet is an original masterpiece by a former Columbus Academy senior-a tradition that started in 2005. Unfortunately, the new building lacks the space for these cabinets.
Similarly, the personalized, colorful seniors’ signatures on the walls of his personal office have to stay behind. Yet Block is confident that the artwork of his incoming students will illuminate the new space in the same way.
Mr. Block recognizes the sunny-side of the art room transfer: large windows, more space, and a location off the beaten path. “Leaving the old behind isn’t all that bad,” says Block.
