The boys lacrosse team had three games in the past week: away at Westerville Central, and home for both Anthony Wayne and St. Francis DeSales. The Vikings won one of three, pulling out a victory over Anthony Wayne. Academy is 6-5 on the season, but will need to close out the season well in to get the seeding it wants.
On Monday, April 25, the Vikings traveled to Westerville Central (4-8) for a game against the Warhawks. Despite gaining an early advantage, the Vikes quickly saw their lead slip away as the Warhawks scored 5 unanswered goals on its way to a 10-7 victory. Otis Klingbeil’16, who has scored multiple goals in every game this year for Academy, led the Vikes with 3 in the loss. Despite the tough defeat, Academy had an opportunity to redeem itself against Anthony Wayne (1-6) later that week.
On Friday, April 29, Academy looked to defend its home turf against the Generals of Anthony Wayne. The Vikings took a big lead out of the gate, as they often do, and this time they held on, winning 8-5. Senior captain Klingbeil, junior Roman Bellisari, and freshmen David Barren and Malcolm Klingbeil each scored 2 goals to make up the offense. Defender Anthony Sugar was also vital in the win, hounding the Anthony Wayne attackmen all night long. When the Generals got off a good shot, Academy goalkeeper, Dalton Porter, was there to defend it, racking up 9 saves on the game. By recovering from two consecutive losses, the Vikings were back on track heading into a rematch with DeSales the next day.
On Saturday, April 30, the Vikes were hoping to avenge a loss earlier in the season at DeSales with a win at home this time around. The Stallions, however, again proved to be too much, overpowering the Viking defense en route to a 13-7 victory. Once again, Otis led Academy in scoring with 3 goals.
Freshman attackman Greyson Noblitt, was concerned after the week, saying “We were hoping to take two, maybe all three of these games, and the fact that we only won one was somewhat disappointing. However, DeSales is a really good team, probably the best we’ve faced all year, so you have to give them credit. Also, I think Westerville Central caught us on an off night. So, these losses aren’t really as bad as they seem. This being said, we still have to make sure we play our best throughout the entire game, instead of coming out strong and fading in the second half like we’ve been doing.”
Academy looks to rebound with a home win against Sylvania Southview on Saturday, May 7.
