Academy’s boys track team faced off against Worthington Christian, Beechcroft, and Tree of Life last Tuesday, April 12. Although it was not an overall win, individual performances by some athletes gave optimistic indications for the rest of the season and the post-season.
Kevin Boyce Jr.’17, a member of last year’s 4×400 team that placed first at the state finals, had an especially strong performance. Boyce showed off his state-level talent with a win in the 400 meter dash and the 200 meter dash, with times of 52.68 and 23.60 seconds, respectively.
Team captain Logan Baker’16 showed his characteristic speed, taking a place at the top of the podium for the 800 meter run with a time of 2:01.65. Baker placed first at states in this very event, and his experience and skill were evident with his 9-second margin of victory.
Academy’s famous 4×400 team placed second behind Beechcroft, but the difference between the two teams’ times was a mere 0.08 seconds, and, with its members’ great individual performances, Academy sports fans are sure to witness another great season for them.
In the punishing 3200 meter run, Grayson Mick ‘17 and Andrew Heermann’16 both finished in the top three with times of 11:15.46 and 11:15.78, respectively. The top three finishers finished with close times that were well ahead of the next best time.
In field events, Jacob Taub’17 showed the products of the team’s rigorous workout schedule with a shot put distance of 38-01 and a discus distance of 104-05, earning him second place in both events out of a field of 19 other throwers.
With these and many more good performances, it is safe to say that this meet showed the team’s all-around potential.
Boyce, a first-place finisher in two events, said, ” . . . all the guys are running as well as me, too. We have a ton of depth which will really serve us well.”
Academy sports fans should look forward to great season ahead.
