Mr. Block’s Art History Course Growing in Popularity

Originally started in the early 1990s, Art History was partially inspired by Academy’s current ceramics and sculpture teacher, Andy Rahe’94.

As a student, Rahe used to sit by Mr. Block’s desk during his free time and read about different eras in art. Rahe’s and other students’ interest in the history of art led to the creation of a full-time course.

“We started teaching Art History because every school worth its weight in art should at least have this opportunity,” says Mr. Block.

The class enables its students to look at art  in a classroom setting. Currently studying Egyptian art, the class  analyzes and criticizes different works of art from a number of time periods. Not only does this study allow students to learn about different types or art, but it helps them advance their individual art knowledge and appreciation.
