Academy’s field hockey team is hitting its stride at just the right time. The Vikes beat Dublin Jerome on October 5 and Bexley on October 8. With just three games left before the state tournament and a five game winning streak in tow, the team is looking to avenge last year’s championship loss with a state title this year.
On Monday, October 5, the Vikes traveled to Dublin Jerome to take on the Celtics. Although neither team played its best game, Academy ground out a 2-0 win behind a tough defense and goals from seniors Maddie Vaziri and Grace Geiger, both of whom have been essential this year, serving not only as captains but also as the top goal-scorers. Although the Vikings were happy with a win over Jerome, they were looking for a stronger performance on their Senior Night.
Seven seniors were recognized on October 8th’s Senior Night: Caroline Aronowitz, Katie Boeckman, Alyssa Edwards, Paige Farlin, Grace Geiger, Lottie Smith, and Maddie Vaziri. The Vikings hosted Bexley, and all five goals were scored by seniors, with four from Geiger and one from Vaziri. The Academy defense was solid again–as it has been all season–shutting out its ninth team in thirteen games. With a blowout 5-0 win against their archrival, the Vikings are peaking as the seeding for the state tournament looms.
The Vikes hope to claim an eleventh state title for Academy and sustain its reputation as the dominant field hockey team in Ohio.
