Book Review: Texts from Jane Eyre

If you have ever wondered what your favorite characters would act like in the modern world, this is the book for you.

Written by blogger Mallory Orthberg, Texts from Jane Eyre: And Other Conversations With Your Favorite Literary Characters explores what conversations between characters in novels would have been like if they had been walking around with iPhones.

The book is a collection of text messages between a wide range of literature’s most beloved characters, from The Odyssey to Pride and Prejudice to The Outsiders. It began with a series of popular posts on her blog, “The Toast,” which is a comic, feminist blog centered on books and popular culture.

Texts from Jane Eyre is a delightful read, and you can still enjoy it without having read the books that Orthberg highlights. It is easy to imagine characters sending these messages, and Orthberg captures their personalities through the flirty, angry, passive-aggressive, and downright funny conversations. It can be crass at times and sink to low humor at others, but is a laugh out loud book that will make you fall in love with reading all over again.
