Kick-Pleats are Here to Stay

This year, Columbus Academy launched its first school-wide skirt policy changes, requiring that all girls– except for seniors–wear kick-pleat skirts. The issue has caused dissent among upper school girls in particular, who complained that it was inconvenient and expensive to purchase an entire new set of skirts for the upcoming school year.

I sympathize with those students and their parents who have to abandon a closet of skirts for an entirely new set, but the school administration’s stance is anything but groundless. As a private school, it is part of our responsibility to ensure that girls feel comfortable at all times.

I can’t tell much of a difference between any of the skirts. I honestly had no idea what any of the types of skirts were until they announced the changes to our dress code, and I barely pay attention to what girls are wearing in general unless they are wearing something in blatant disregard for dress code.

That said, it’s probably not a bad idea to start looking at some skirts if you don’t have any in dress code styles, considering school has been going for nearly two weeks now. Here’s some price ranges for skirts this year. It pays to shop around.

JCPENNEY:              $15.00 (FRENCH TOAST)

TARGET:                     $17.99

LANDS END:            $9.99-$35.00

SCHOOL CLOSET: $31.99
