Saturday April 26th, Academy tennis fulfilled expectations in the Mid-State League tournament, bringing home the title. Riding off earlier victories in league matches, the team was the favorite of Saturday’s competition.
Academy had byes through the first round because of their previous performance, and felt confident throughout the next round of play. The biggest challenges came in the final round against Worthington Christian and Bexley.
Although Jacob Wareti’16, first singles, fell to Worthington Christian’s Joel Montomery, this is Academy’s only loss of the entire tournament. While Bexley shifted its lineup to try to assure doubles victories, Academy answered the challenge. First doubles, Ryan Jung’14 and Shrikar Kundar’15, and second doubles, Nikhil Patel’14 and Dean Firouzian’14, both defeated Bexley competitors.
The team kept it exciting off the court as well Saturday. They listened to the Ghostbusters theme for five hours on loop, played flag football, and rescued their runaway tent. The boys celebrated their success by consuming a combined 296 ounces of the Academy students’ favorite drink, Speedy Freeze.
