Boys basketball

Boys basketball finished this season at 11-13 with an eight-game winning streak but unfortunately lost to Bishop Ready 49-45 in the tournament. Seniors this year were Bryce Bailey, Jono Kornberg (also the team’s main scorer), Turner Montgomery, Lee Solomon, Charlie Watters, and  Grayson Wise. Keep an eye out next year for Ryan Alexander, Max Bechtel, and Scott McKenzie. Congratulations to the team on a great season!

Girls basketball

After a 46-26 loss to Northmor last Monday, the Academy girls basketball team concluded its season with a 7-11 record. Limited by  upperclass students this year, the squad still found a way to make great strides throughout the season, including marquee wins against Whitehall, West Jefferson, and CSG. The Vikes graduate only one senior, so the future looks bright for the 2014-15 year. Sophomores Caroline Aronowitz, Zaria McBride, and Never Adler are expected to take leadership roles next season and build on the improvement they made this year. Congratulations to senior guard, Brie Stahl, on an excellent 4-year career!

Bowling

The bowling season has officially ended after the boys team finished 10th at last week’s district tournament. The girls finished 11th. Although the team finished another season without reaching the state tournament, its steady improvement is evident! With returning male bowlers Max Smith’15 and Aaron Brown’16, who bowled a personal best of 256 this season, the team should find its way to the next round come 2014-15!

Seva Luchianov, the only senior, will be greatly missed next season. Luchianov helped lead the guys’ team to a 3rd place finish in the MSL, with multiple tough wins along the way. The girls team had no seniors this season and still finished 4th in the MSL! Juniors Emma Farrenkopf and Allie Wallace should have break out seasons next year.

Boys Swimming

The Vikings swimming season ended for the guys after an 11th place finish for the 200-medley relay team and a 27th place team finish at the state meet.  Swimmers Gavin Koerner’14, Mitchell Dreisbach’14, Dylan Warren’15, and Nate Goldfarb’17 were all recognized as All-Ohio selections after posting their best time of the season in their relay. The standout of the weekend was rising-star Nate Goldfarb! Along with his exceptional performance in the medley-relay, this freshman turned heads in Canton when placing 10th in the 100-breast stroke and 18th in the 200-IM!

The Vikings captured another MSL title, as well as 1st and 3rd place finishes at the sectional and district meets! Congratulations on an excellent season, and thank you to seniors Mitchell Dreisbach, Gavin Koerner, Tyler Kohman, and Brian Korda.

Girls swimming

The Girls team closed out its season with a 12th place team finish at the state tournament, along with two impressive relay finishes. The 200 free-relay of Sherman’14, Kone’15, Wilson’15, and Brault’16 broke a school record during its 6th place finish at the meet. The other relay team of Campbell, Sherman, Cullen 14 and Kone finished 10th in the 200-medley. Individually, Abby Wilson brought home most of the team’s points with her school-record breaking 5th place finish in the 200-free. Wilson also finished 13th in the 100-back!The Aqua Vikes accumulated 3rd place sectional and district finishes and as an MSL title this year! The team will sincerely miss senior leaders: SueSan Chen, Lauren Cullen, Kyle O’Hara, and Brianna King. Further success, however, should be expected from the future girls team

Wrestling

Daniel Jones’15 was the only Viking wrestler to compete at the state level this year after finishing second at the district tournament. After an unfortunate early exit due to a shoulder injury, however, Dan was eliminated in the first round and finished the season with a record of 28-3. Although the team wished for a stronger year, the Vikings still achieved plenty this season and can look forward to an even more success next year! Some of the team’s key wrestlers, Tim Leathery, Dan Jones, and Sam Wittman will only improve for the 2015 season. A special thank you to Cory Bartholomew for his 3 years of participation and fellow senior Alden Campo for joining the team this season!
