Academy students were whisked back in time during Saturday night’s Winter Formal, thrown by none other than Jay Gatsby. The hallway between the gyms was transformed into an elegant boardwalk – complete with various casino games and a silhouette of New York City–ideal for taking photos of this memorable night. A string of lights softly illuminated several benches and tables set alongside the wall for exhausted dancers.
The dance floor itself was placed in the main athletic lobby accompanied by Gatsby’s Café – which offered a chocolate fountain and a variety of delicious brownies. Students danced the night away while confetti rained down from the ceiling as the muted Di Caprio’s Gatsby was featured on a large screen across from the weight room.
At 10:20PM, Gatsby’s guests were ushered into the new gym to enjoy an aerialist show featuring sophomore Ellie Levine. Students and faculty members alike watched in awe as Levine, accompanied by two other aerialists, performed graceful stretches and daring drops on two ribbons hung high above the ground.
After the show, people slowly began to depart back into the twenty-first century but taking with them memories of a lavish West Egg party. It is safe to say that it will be difficult to top this unforgettable winter formal. Well done, Gatsby.
