Fall Sports’ Updates

Volleyball
Academy’s 2013 volleyball team is almost unrecognizable compared to last year’s squad! Senior captains, Lauren Vodnick, Addison Anders, and Jillian Woodard, have set an extraordinary example for younger team players. The Volley Vikes have a current record of 12-7, and we hope their regular season success carries over into the post season as well!

Boys Cross Country
As it began to finish up a successful regular season run, the boys cross country team has displayed the weapons to compete for a top place at this year’s state meet. The team is led by senior captains Benjamin Uchimura, Aron Aziz, and Alex Ho, all who have been running at the varsity level for four years. At the second largest cross-country meet in the nation, held at Tiffin University, the Vikings placed 11th out of 49 teams, solidifying their position as one of the top squads in Ohio. This Saturday, October 12th, the boys placed 2nd in the Mid-State League. Good luck to all the runners this post-season!

Girls Cross Country
The girls cross country team hopes to follow up its state qualifying performance from last season with a 2013 state championship this year. The team’s even mix of veterans and young talent could very well be its recipe for success. After a 4th place finish at Tiffin University—out of 49 teams—and a recent MSL Title added to the trophy case, the goal of a state championship doesn’t seem so farfetched. Be on the lookout for junior Julia Rizk as well as 9th grader, Audrey Grammel, in the upcoming post-season meets!

Field Hockey
As we all know, Academy has a storied tradition of top-notch field hockey teams throughout its history. Last year’s state championship team of  experienced talent led a young group to victory over Watterson in its final game of the season. And although the 2013 team has lost some of its premier talent from the previous year, it has not flinched once this season. In fact, it may be on its way to another Field Hockey Final Four. Senior leaders Kat Restrepo, Rachel Theis, and Brianna Stahl anchor this year’s Vikings with plenty of younger players’ assistance. The squad is currently 11-2-1, including a couple of intense battles with league rival, Thomas Worthington. The Vikes finished second in the MSL this season, and they participate in their first tournament game next Wednesday!

Golf
The Academy Golf team concluded its 2013 season as Ohio State Runner-Ups on Saturday, October 12th. This year’s team acquired the MSL and sectional championships, along with a 3rd place finish at Districts on its journey to the state tournament. Junior, Carter Kistler, who was selected to First Team All-Ohio, finished 5th overall on Saturday with an overall score of 153. Congratulations to the Vikings, as this title marks the 15th time Academy’s golf team has finished 1st or 2nd in school history! Additionally, kudos to Chloe Bradburn’15 and Allie Wallace’15 for phenomenal individual seasons as they both made it to districts!

Boys Soccer
After an impressive regional semi-final appearance last season, the 2013 boy’s soccer team has the potential to go even further this year. After losing top seniors John Michael Long and Thomas Nolan last year, most thought the current team might struggle this season. But after recent wins over the likes of Worthington Christian, Bishop Hartley, and Jonathon Alder, the boy’s soccer team is now ranked 1st in the state! The Vikings hold a current record of 11-4-1 and finished up their regular season schedule this weekend with games against New Albany and Bishop Watterson. Expect a phenomenal run from these guys during their post-season tournament!

Girls Soccer
This year’s girls soccer team returned most of its key players from a season ago including 2012 Mid State League Player of the Year, Katerina Weikert. Returning juniors, Kelly Brown, Annie Meacham, and Jenna Berlet have assisted Weikert and contributed to the team’s success. The group ends the regular season at 7-3-6, and won its first tournament game this past weekend against Liberty Union.

Girls Tennis
After an impressive post-season run to the state championship last season, the girls tennis team has continued its winning tradition in the 2013 season. It returned with nearly all of last season’s players, including defending doubles state champions Hannah Wexner’14 and Andrea Ballinger’15. The squad will play in its second straight state championship on October 18th!

Football

With a record of 4-3 and two of the team’s biggest games on the way, playoffs are starting to look very likely for the Academy football team this season. With senior captains, Lee Solomon, Charlie Watters, Bryce Bailey and Isaac Sheumaker leading the way with the help of key players Ben Dahl’15, Matt Schmidt’16 and Jack Mills’16, get ready for some great football in upcoming games against Madison Plains and Bexley.
