On track: Penn. Relays

Last Friday,on April 27th, a visitor to our school would have noticed groups of students flocking into the senior lounge or huddled in classrooms, captivated by something on the screens. Why? For the first time in Academy’s history, track coach Bob Kirk took a squad of boys to compete at The 2012 Penn Relays in Philadelphia.

As students watched and cheered from afar, Jake Tuckerman’14, Jack Lint’14, Dominic Facciolla’13, and Jon Michael Hilsheimer’12 ran a 8:02.12 in the 4×800 relay, finishing 17th among over 70 teams from small schools across the country.

On Saturday,April 28th, Tyler Gittens ’13 joined Facciolla, Lint, and Hilsheimer to compete in the 4×400 relay. This team finished with a time of 3:31.18, placing it 193rd in over 553 teams.

In a letter to students and faculty, Coach Kirk thanked everyone for supporting the team, saying, “The guys were really [psyched] when they found out people were able to see [the race] live school.”

Back in Ohio, the Vikes will join the girls team to compete at Worthington Christian on Tuesday, May 1st, before heading to the Mid-State League Championship the following week.
