Girls Swimming: Districts

On the heels of a second place finish in both the Mid State League and in Sectionals, the girls swim team came into Districts ready to compete. This past Saturday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, the Lady Vikes certainly made a splash. Qualifying for states in ten events and setting four new school records, the girls’ team finished third in the district.

In the Medley Relay, Abby Wilson, Sarah Wilson, Abby Brown, and Anya Kone’ combined to swim a time of 1: 48.37, not only starting the evening off with a first place, but also setting a school record. Senior co-captain, S. Wilson, returned two events later to swim a 1: 55.58 in the 200 Free, winning her second place, and a 10th seed in the state. Following that, she continued to come in second and shatter a record in the 500 Free.

Abby Wilson racked up two school records with her second place finish in the 200 IM, with a time of 2:09.17, and her third place in the 100 Back. Other individual state qualifiers included Kone’ in the 50 Free, Brown and Annie Lee in the 100 Fly, and India Sherman in the 100 Breast.

Coach Craig Yakscoe enthusiastically recalls the meet, saying, “The girls all swam very well and really came together as a team. I’m happy about everyone that made it through to States.”

Swim well they did. The team swims today, Thursday, February, 23, and tomorrow at Canton’s C.T. Branin Natatorium, as they take on new opponents in the state meet.
